Context
Surfaced by the #17863 dense-tour repair at its design boundary. Since #17857 removed the workstation's 1280px-era band caps (restoring edge-resize agency), the boot bands render their committed document extents proportionally at every size: at the film stage (2560×1440) the left band is now ~507px (20%), right ~634px (25%), bottom ~335px (25%) — where the tuned dense look was ~260/320/200 under the old caps.
The Problem
The dense-composition design intent — guarded by WorkstationNL.spec.mjs's density leg (heavyWidth ≥ 700, band literals at :793-795 and :1042, evidence-card proportions) — was authored against quasi-fixed band pixels. Under proportional extents the center row keeps ~1340px at 2560 and the heavy tab panel computes to ~534px: the "dense living center" the film frames genuinely shrinks. This is a product decision, not a spec defect:
- Re-tune
initialDocument's edge extents for the film look (e.g. left ~0.13, right ~0.16, bottom ~0.17 — floors keep small viewports sane; the user can still drag to 50%). One-line-per-zone change in apps/workstation/tour/denseWorkstation.mjs; the tour's own workspace: {2560×1440} stage then reproduces the designed density.
- Accept the proportional look and re-derive the density leg's expectations (the film reframes).
- Workstation re-caps via fluid maxima (e.g.
max(16.25rem, 25cqi)) — keeps growth agency while bounding boot width; partially reverts #17857's simplification.
Option 1 preserves both the film design and the resize agency; recommended.
Decision (2026-08-30)
Option 1 selected, with live-derived extents 0.11 / 0.14 / 0.17 (left / right / bottom). The ticket's approximate 0.13 / 0.16 / 0.17 candidate restored the heavy pane but still left the 100k grid's final header 41.859px outside its toolbar at the 2560×1440 stage. Tightening the horizontal pair to 0.11 / 0.14 yields roughly 279 / 355px bands — close to the prior 260 / 320 composition, preserves the wider evidence band, and satisfies both independent center-density guards. Bottom remains 0.17 (roughly 228px).
The Fix
Adjust only initialDocument's three edge extents and the two owning whitebox surfaces. WorkstationResidentCardSizingNL receives the focused film-stage contract: worker-owned document extents must agree with rendered band geometry, the heavy resident group remains at least 700px wide, and the scale headers fit with bounded trailing space. WorkstationNL keeps its broader geometry expectations current and advances beyond the density leg. Its independent late-tour regressions have separate durable owners: #17871 for midpoint-scroll grid continuity and #17872 for the Security FLIP-stage recurrence.
Acceptance Criteria
Out of Scope
- Engine/theme bounds (settled by #17857 + its review).
- The tour's mechanical layers except the remaining same-genus first-match/count sites exposed only after the density gate moved; those witness-only corrections fold here so the residual test can reach its owning assertions.
- Midpoint-scroll grid continuity (#17871) and the Security fixed-stage recurrence (#17872). Both occur after the density contract passes; neither is fixed or waived here.
