Context
The film's takes on the operator's display show a stable defect at the compose beat (#15252; Fable's evidence on #16498, comment). When Commits docks into the Metrics vessel by a convert-while-dragging transfer (take time ≈12.7 s), its resident card shows its kicker (CHANGE STREAM) and icon, with no metric (+42) and no title (Commit Stream). It stays that way until the native return's first projection (≈14.9 s). It happens at a1f4695af0, ed40abe12c, 4f71641ec3, and at the gating head 5b69fc1dac. The cut owner (#14800) ruled it a v13.2 gate: it is deterministic and visible in the film's hero beat. This leaf carries the compose trigger; #16498 stays the composition gate.
The Problem
Not a disclosure tier, by source. Workstation.view.ResidentComponent renders the whole card as one html string. The @container workstation-pane ladder in apps/workstation/Viewport.scss hides the icon at ≤118 px, the title at ≤92 and the kicker at ≤64. A kicker and icon without title and metric is therefore not a declared tier. #16498's contract already says such a frame must red.
Not a DOM or layout state headless reproduces (probe). In WorkstationFilmTourNL › autoGates at 5b69fc1dac, a per-frame sampler in every window shows the composed pane at 84 px for one frame (2 ms), a declared kicker + metric tier, then 204 px with every part visible. No clipping ancestor appears.
Two mechanisms remain:
- (a) Clipping in the headed vessel. An ancestor (the vessel's tab body or card container) holds a stale or transitional height between the compose commit and the next projection, on real window geometry.
- (b) Paint lag in the vessel's OS window. The DOM is complete, but the window's raster lags until the return's projection repaints it.
The Architectural Reality
- The compose is a cross-window transfer into an existing vessel:
Operations.transferItem, the two-document operation, driven by the tour's convert-while-dragging cue. The vessel is a second browser window (index.html?popout=metrics) with its own workspace projection.
- Design authority: #16498's replacement contract: "kicker-visible + metric-hidden is never a declared tier and must red".
The Fix
The discriminator comes first (AC-1). Then, per the cut owner's escape:
- (a): a relayout or size sync at the compose commit in the vessel lands before the cut.
- (b): a cheap repaint of the vessel at the compose commit if one exists. Otherwise the operator decides whether to ship with it (the film cuts the beat), and this leaf becomes 13.2.1's first.
Acceptance Criteria
Out of Scope
- The place-cycle trigger (#16498's original path); #16498 stays the composition gate.
- The disclosure ladder itself.
